Who can deny that Venice is one of the most romantic cities in the World? Each year over 15 million visitors visit this beautiful city and this Summer I saw for myself how romantic Venice really was. In honour of George Clooney’s wedding in Venice this weekend, I thought it fitting to share my lovely moments from this Italian city.
Venice lies on an archipelago made up of 118 flat islands off the Veneto coast in the Mediterranean. The whole city is supported by millions of wooden platforms and piles keeping it afloat, which is truly incredibly.
Dating back over 1,500 years, the city has over 200 churches, 450 palaces and an eclectic mix of architecture from the Gothic, Byzantine & Baroque eras, to name a few. Gliding across the water on one of the 150 canals feeding into Venice, your eyes are simply drawn to each and every building as you imagine the moments shared on their balconies, or within their walls over the many years.
Over just 3 days our party walked 28 miles round the narrow streets in Venice, breathing in as much of this city as we possible could! A city built for getting lost, I have to admit I forgot my breadcrumbs and let myself be taken on a journey by the narrow passages and hidden back alleys, till I was gallantly rescued by an Italian policeman and directed back to San Marco Piazza!
We travelled along the Grand Canal and walked across the Rialto bridge in the glorious sunshine. We explored the Basilica di San Marco & crossed the infamous Bridge of Sighs; legend says that lovers will be granted eternal bliss should they kiss on a gondola at sunset underneath it!
Approximately 600 couples each year choose to marry the one they love in the City of Venice and I can most definitely see why. I had the pleasure of witnessing a number of newly weds being photographed in one of the many infamous spots in Venice which truly made my trip.
I saw hundreds of black and red polished gondoliers meandering across the many canals, enveloping couples in love & families whilst a gentle accordion played a soothing background song. These views were captivating, and on more than one occasion I had to bring myself back to reality before losing my way again!
I could go on and on about my trip to the romantic City of Venice, but to experience everything this place has to offer, I would recommend you jump on a plane and visit yourself! Easily accessed from the UK and across Europe this is one place that will not disappoint. I returned from my Venice more inspired, relaxed and passionate about my role as a Wedding Planner than ever!
